Q. Conjugation in ciliate protozoans is essential for:
Solution:
Solution:
Conjugation is referred to the form of sexual reproduction in which there is an exchange of nuclear substance between two organisms of the same species through the formation of sex pili. Such a type of reproduction is generally observed in primitive or lower classes of organisms like protozoa. In this process, two organisms fuse together and a haploid nucleus from each cell migrate to the other and binds to the haploid micronucleus within the cell. The parent cell then separates such that each parent now possesses a fertilized cell. When these fertilized cells divide later, they produce daughter cells with recombined DNA. Hence, protozoan conjugation promotes nuclear reorganisation.
