The middle ear of frog consists of only a single rod-shaped bone called columella auris (stapes - modified hyomandibular) which extends across the tympanic chamber from tympanic membrane to fenestra ovalis. Its inner end (base) called stapedial plate, is like a subspherieal cartilage plug fitting upon the fenestra ovalis.
