Colchicine is a type of alkaloid that many applications. One of the major applications is in the treatment of diseases gout and Behcet's disease. It is also useful in the plant breeding process where it induces polyploidy by inhibiting the segregation of the chromosomes during meiosis resulting in half of the gametes with whole chromosomes and another half with no chromosomes.
Colchicine is produced by the flowering plant Colchicum autumnale. The alkaloid is obtained from the bulb-like corms formed in the plant. This plant is considered deadly poisonous due to its colchicine content.
