: The first movement against felling of trees was in 1731 by Amrita Devi of village Khejarili (Jodhpur District). Recently an organized movement was started in Dec. 1970 which is now famous as Chipko Movement under the leadership of Mr. Sunderlal Bahuguna. He presented a plan regarding ban on tree felling in himalayas at the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) meeting held in London in 1982.
