Carbon dioxide on reaction with water gives a weak dibasic acid called carbonic acid which dissociates as H2CO3(aq)+H2O(l)HCO3−(aq)+H3O+(aq) HCO3−(aq)+H2O(l)CO32−(aq)+H3O+(aq)
It is called dibasic because it has two hydrogen ions to donate to a base in an acid base reaction
