The sky waves are of practical importance for very long distance radio communication. If one wishes to send signals at far away stations, then either repeater transmitting stations are necessary or height of the antenna is to be increased. However, much before the advent of satellites, radio broadcast covered long distances by the reflection of signals from the ionosphere. This mode of transmission is called ionospheric propagation or sky wave of transmission is called ionospheric propagation or sky wave propagation. All radio waves are not sky waves.
