Sphaeranthus indicus is a sticky, annual, aromatic herb growing up to 50 cm tall with broad stem and alternate leaves. The inflorescence is of globose-ellipsoid head of 12-15 mm long and purple coloured at the time of anthesis and with the fruit forming achene type.

Cyathium type of inflorescence has a conical or cup-like receptacle surrounded by an involucre of five green or coloured bracts having nectariferous glands. Internally, the inflorescence contains pedicellate achlamydeous and unisexual flowers of both male and female types. The single female flower is centrally placed and numerous male flowers are arranged centrifugally. This type of inflorescence is observed in Euphorbia species.
