Sexual reproduction in sponges occurs by the formation of gametes. Sponges are hermaphrodites (sexes are not separate) but still perform cross-fertilization. Fertilization is internal, and development is indirect. The larva is free-swimming, however, the adult is sessile (fixed to substratum). Asexual reproduction in sponges occurs by the process of fragmentation.
