Some plants adapt to the underground stem modification system, where the stem that derived from stem tissue exists under the soil surface. These underground stems play several roles such as food and nutrients storage tissue, production of new clones, and in survival from one growing season to the other (perennation). Types of underground stem include bulbs, corms, rhizomes, stolons, and tubers.
Potato or tubers is a modified stem that stores food. Axillary buds arise from the node region of potato. These tubers do not have adventitious roots.
Onion and Colocasia are also modified stem known as bulb and corms, and both of them possess adventitious roots.
