During Pachytene phase Crossing over (i.e. exchange of equal segments of non sister chromatids belonging to homologous chromosomes) takes place. The chromosome pair consists of four chromatids and thus, crossing over takes at four stranded stage. Only two of the four chromatids take part in crossing over. Since the pachytene chromosomes are long, this stage is considered most suitable for the study of chromosome morphology.
