Agar-Agar is a gelatinous, bleached material which is extracted from certain red algae such as Gelidium, Gracilaria, Petrochladia, Acanthopeltis and Chondrus. Rhodymenia is one the most used red algae for agar-agar extraction. In India, agar-agar is obtained from the species of Gelidium, Gelidiella, Gigartine, Gracilaria, Gymnogangyrum and Gracilaria, Hypnea. Agar-Agar is used in medicines as a laxative, in clarification of liquors and also as a culture medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi.
