The parenchyma tissue in aquatic plants (eg, Hydrilla, Potamogeton etc) and in some land plants (eg, petiole of banana, Catena) are called aerenchyma because they make a network leaving wide air spaces (air-cavities) for gaseous exchange and make the aquatic plants light and bouyant, so that they easily afloat.
