Acid rain is the precipitation having a pH value of less than about 5.0 which has adverse effect on the fauna and flora, on which it falls. Rainwater has a pH value of 5.6 due to the presence of dissolved CO2. Acid rain results from emission into the atmosphere of various pollutant gases, particularly SO2 and various oxides of nitrogen, which originate from burning of fossil fuel, car exhaust fumes etc. CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons) mainly act as ozone destroyer.
Chief source of H2S are decaying vegetation and animal matter especially in aquatic habitats. It causes headache, nausea, collapse, coma and finally death.
