Q. Acid rain is mainly caused by the increased concentration (in the atmosphere) of

AMUAMU 2001

Solution:

Acid rain is the precipitation having a pH value of less than about $5.0$ which has adverse effect on the fauna and flora, on which it falls. Rainwater has a pH value of $5.6$ due to the presence of dissolved $CO _{2}$. Acid rain results from emission into the atmosphere of various pollutant gases, particularly $SO _{2}$ and various oxides of nitrogen, which originate from burning of fossil fuel, car exhaust fumes etc. CFCs (Chloro Fluoro Carbons) mainly act as ozone destroyer. Chief source of $H _{2} S$ are decaying vegetation and animal matter especially in aquatic habitats. It causes headache, nausea, collapse, coma and finally death.
