Solution:

An operon is a functionally integrated genetic unit for the control of gene expression in bacteria. Typically, it comprises of a closely linked group of structural genes, coding for protein, and adjacent loci controlling their expression i.e., an operator site and a promoter site. Operator region regulates the expression of structural genes, as a repressor can bind to the operator region thus inhibiting attachment of RNA polymerase to promoter region and subsequent protein synthesis.
