Cl2 water being aqueous and CHCl3 being organic form two layers. Cl2 water oxidizes I- arrow I2 which shows its colour (violet) in organic layer (CHCl3). This is layer test which is used for detection of I- and Br- in a solution. Br- gives brown layer.
