Lens-maker's formula is given by f1=(aμg−1)(R11−R21)....(i)
where aμg is refractive index of glass w.r.t. air, R1 and R2 are radii of curvature of two surfaces of lens and f is focal length of the lens.
If the lens is immersed in a liquid of refractive index μp, then fl1=(lμg−1)(R11−R21)....(ii)
Here, lμg is refractive index of glass w.r.t. liquid.
Dividing Eq. (i) by Eq. (ii), we have ffl=(lμg−1)(aμg−1)⇒ffl=(1.251.5−11.5−1) ⇒ffl=0.250.5×1.25=2.5
Hence, focal length increases by a factor of 2.5.
