Q.
A galvanometer connected with an unknown resistor and two identical cells in series each of emf 2V shows a current of 1A. If the cells are connected in parallel, it shows 0.8A. Then the internal resistance of the cell is
Here, emf of each cell, ε=2V Let R be resistance of unknown resistor and r be internal resistance of each cell.
In circuit (a), When the cells are connected in series, Current in the circuit, I=r+r+R2ε=2r+R2×2 1=2r+R4 or 2r+R=4...(i)
In circuit (b), When the cells are connected in parallel, Current in the circuit, I=r+rr×r+Rε=2r+R2 0.8=2r+R2 2r+R=0.82=25...(ii)
Subtract (ii) from (i), we get 23r=23 or r=1Ω
