Q.
A bullet fired into a fixed target loses half of its velocity after penetrating 3cm. How much further it will penetrate before coming to rest, assuming that it faces constant resistance to motion ?
According to work-energy theorem, W=ΔK Case I : −F×3=21m(2v0)2−21mv02
where, F is resistive force and v0 is initial speed. Case II : Let, the further distance travelled by the bullet before coming to rest is s. ∴−F(3+s)=Kf−ki=21mv02
or 41(3+s)=1
or 43+4s=1 ∴s=1cm
