Solution:
It is not possible to hit beyond maximum range. The body covers a horizontal distance AB during its flight. This horizontal range is given by R=gu2sin2θ...(i)
where, u is velocity of projection, θ is angle of projection and g is acceleration due to gravity. For maximum horizontal range sin2θ=1 ∴Rmax=gu2...(ii)
Given, R=3km,θ=30∘ ∴ From Eq. (i) gu2=sin2θR=sin60∘3=33×2=3×2 ∴gu2=3.464m
Hence, maximum range with velocity of projection u cannot be more than 3.464m. Hence, it is not possible to hit a target 5km away.
