Carbon dioxide is transported in the blood from the tissue to the lungs in three ways: 1 (i) 7% dissolved in solution; (ii) 70 % as bicarbonates; (iii) 23% bound to proteins, particularly haemoglobin. Approximately 20 to 25% of carbon dioxide is transport in the red blood cell and 75% in the plasma.
