Q.
Yellow coloured aqueous solution of sodium chromate changes to orange when acidified with sulphuric acid because
The d-and f-Block Elements
Solution:
The reaction between Sodium Chromate and Sulphuric acid is given as:
$2 Na _{2} CrO _{4}+ H _{2} SO _{4} \rightarrow Na _{2} Cr _{2} O _{7}+ H _{2} O + Na _{2} SO _{4}$
$CrO _{4}^{2-}$ (chromate ion) is yellow in colour. When it is oxidized by $H ^{+} in Cr _{2} O _{7}^{2-}$ (dichromate ion), the colour changes to orange.
