Experiment of Beadle and Tatum on Neurospora crassa proved that every gene is responsible for a single specific gene. This is known as one gene one enzyme hypothesis. One-gene-oneenzyme hypothesis was put forward by Beadle and Tatum (1948) which states that a gene controls a structural or functional trait through controlling the synthesis of a specific protein on enzymes formed by latter.
