Q. Which type of graph gives straight line in langmuir adsorption isotherm?
Surface Chemistry
A
$\frac{x}{m}\to \frac{1}{P}$
B
$\frac{m}{x} \to \frac{1}{P}$
C
$\log _{10} \frac{x}{m} \to \frac{1}{P}$
D
$ \log _{10} \frac{x}{m} \to P$
Solution:
$\frac{x}{m}=\frac{a p}{1+b p}$
This equation is known as Lagmuir adsorption isotherm. where; $x=$ mass of gas adsorbed
m = grams of the adsorbent and a and b are constants.
Taking reciprocal of both sides, we have
$\frac{ m }{ x }=\frac{1+ bp }{ ap }$
$\frac{ m }{ x }=\frac{1}{ ap }+\frac{ b }{ a }$
Thus; a plot of $\frac{ m }{ x }$ versus $\frac{1}{ p }$ will be straight line.
