Q. Which structure of the lungs is directly involved in O2/CO2 exchange between air and blood capillary?

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Breathing and Exchange of Gases

Solution:

The alveoli represent the ultimate structural and physiological units of the lung. Alveoli provide a large surface area for gaseous exchange by diffusion. The alveolar wall is very thin, consisting of squamous epithelium and an extensive network of blood capillaries. Due to very intimate contact of blood capillaries with the alveoli, the exchange of gases takes place smoothly.
