Q. Which species does not exist?
JIPMER
JIPMER 2000
A
$ {{(SiC{{l}_{6}})}^{2-}} $
B
$ CCl_{6}^{2-} $
C
$ GeCl_{6}^{2-} $
D
$ AlCl_{4}^{-} $
Solution:
$ CCl_{6}^{2-} $ does not exist. The reason is that carbon has no d-orbital, hence it cannot combine with 6 chlorine-atoms. All others (Si, Ge and Al) have d-orbital, hence form the given ions.
