Q. Which reagent can be used for the alkylation of aromatic nitro compounds?

J & K CETJ & K CET 2001

Solution:

The $ NO_{2} $ group is ring deactivating group. Hence, it does not favour electrophilic alkylation in benzene. Nitrobenzene undergoes nucleophilic alkylation by carbanion intermediate. Hence, methyl sulphonyl carbanion is used for the alkylation of aromatic nitro compounds.
