The human kidney has about 85% cortical nephrons and about 15% juxta-medullary nephrons. The cortical nephrons are highly coiled structures with major parts present in the cortex region. Juxta-medullary nephrons have a long loop of Henle which runs deep in the medulla, well developed Vasa recta, and are mainly activated during a shortage of water.
