Q. Which one of the following has (have) octahedral geometry ?
(i) $SbCl^{-}_6$
(ii) $SnCl^{2-}_6$
(iii) $XeF_6$
(iv) $IO^{5-}_6$

UPSEEUPSEE 2017Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Except (iii) i.e. $XeF _{6}$, all other show octahedral geometry.

$XeF _{6}$ has $6 \sigma$ bonds and one lone pair of electrons, hence show distorted octahedral structure also known as pentagonal bipyramidal with one lone pair.

All other shows octahedral geometry.

(i) $SbCl^{-}_{6}$ : image

(Octahedral with no lone pair)

(ii) $SnCl^{2-}_{6}$ : image

(Octahedral with no lone pair)

(iii) $XeF_{6}$ : image

(Distorted octahedral with one lone pair)

(iv) $IO^{5-}_{6}$: image

(Octahedral with no lone pair)
