Q. Which one of the following does not give white precipitate with acidified silver nitrate solution?

AIIMSAIIMS 2016Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Solution:

In (c), chlorine is attached to sp3 hybridized C-atom and C—Cl bond is more polar thus, it easily gives AgCl precipitate. In case of (a) and (b), chlorine is attached to sp2 hybridized C-atom and there is double bond character between C—Cl bond due to resonance i.e., C—Cl bond is stronger bond and hence chlorine cannot be easily replaced.
