Q. Which one of the following compounds gives a positive iodofonn test?

Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2004

Solution:

A positive iodoform test is given by the compounds containing the acetyl group attached to either carbon or hydrogen or by compounds which are oxidised under the condition of the test to derivatives containing the acetyl group eg, ethanol, iso-propanol. Since $1$-phenyl ethanol contains $ CH_3\underset{\overset{|}{O}H}{CH}-$ group, hence gives positive iodoform test.
