Q. Which one of the following arrangements does not give the correct picture of the trends indicated against it ?
(i) $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$ : Oxidizing power
(ii) $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$ : Electron gain enthalpy
(iii) $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$. Bond dissociation energy
(iv) $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$ : Electronegativity.

The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

From the given options we find option (i) is correct. The oxidising power of halogens follow the order $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$. Option (ii) is incorrect because it is not the correct order of electron gain enthalpy of halogens. The correct order is $Cl _2> F _2> Br _2> I _2$. The low value of $F _2$ than $Cl _2$ is due to its small size.
Option (iii) is incorrect. The correct order of bond dissociation energies of halogens is
$Cl _2> Br _2> F _2> I _2$.
Option (iv) is correct. It is the correct order of electronegativity values of halogens.
