Q. Which of the following statements is correct about insectivorous plants?

UP CPMTUP CPMT 2014

Solution:

Carnivorous or insectivorous plants are the plants which can synthesize their food (they are green) and hence they are autotrophs. However, they cannot take their nitrogen from soil as they grow in waterlogged swampy soils deficient in nitrogenous compounds. TTius, the plants are partly heterotrophs. Such plants obtain their nitrogen by catching and digesting small insects. The body of such plants are modified in several ways for capturing insects e.g., Nepenthes, Dionaea, Utricularia. Utricularia is a rootless insectivorous plant where leaves are modified to form small bladders which trap the insects and digests them using enzymes.
