Q. Which of the following statements are correct?
(i) The rate of reactivity of alkanes with halogens is $F _2> Cl _2> Br _2> I _2$.
(ii) Rate of replacement of hydrogens of alkanes is $3^{\circ}>2^{\circ}>1^{\circ}$
(iii) Fluorination of alkanes is a very slow process.
(iv) Iodination of alkanes is too violent to be controlled.

Hydrocarbons

Solution:

For statement (iii), fluorination is too violent to be controlled. For statement (iv), iodination is very slow and reversible reaction. It can be carried out in the presence of oxidizing agents like $HIO _3$ or $HNO _3$.
$CH _4+ I _2 \rightleftharpoons CH _3 I + HI$
$5 HI + HIO _3 \rightarrow 3 I _2+3 H _2 O$
