A catalytic converter is fitted in automobiles to reduce the emission of harmful gases. They are fitted with heavy metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium which act as catalysts and convert unburnt hydrocarbons into $CO_2$ and $H_2O$convert carbon monoxide and nitric oxide into $CO_2$ and $N_{2 .\,\text{However}}$, the use of unleaded petrol is necessary as the lead in petrol inactivates the catalyst.
