Human kidneys have an inner concave center which has a notch called hilum. The blood vessels and nerves enter the kidney through this notch. Human kidneys extend from the 12th thoracic vertebra to the 3rd lumbar vertebra. Human kidneys are metanephric i.e.they develop from the embryonic precursor 'metanephros'. Human kidneys are retroperitoneal i.e. their situated behind the peritoneum.
