Q. Which of the following reagents would you prefer to find out whether the hydrocarbon $ {{C}_{3}}{{H}_{4}} $ contains one-triple bond or two-double bonds?

CMC MedicalCMC Medical 2007

Solution:

If the hydrocarbon $ {{C}_{3}}{{H}_{4}} $ contains a triple bond it must be $ C{{H}_{3}}C\equiv CH. $ Since it being a terminal alkyne, it will react with ammoniacal $ AgN{{O}_{3}} $ solution, to give a white ppt. of silver propynide or with ammoniacal $ CuCl $ solution to give a red ppt. of copper propynide.
