Q. Which of the following reagents could be used to distinguish aniline from methanamine?
(i) Bromine water
(ii) $ CHCl_{3} $ and aqueous $ KOH $
(iii) Dilute $ HCl $
(iv) Nitration mixture under heated condition

J & K CETJ & K CET 2016Amines

Solution:

When bromine water is added to aniline at room temperature, decolourisation of the bromine water occurs and a white ppt. of $2,4,6$-tribromoaniline is obtained

Nitration of aniline will give benzene diazonium chloride which will further form an orange dye with $2$-naphthol and dil $NaOH$ whereas methanamine will liberate $N_{2}$ on reaction with $HNO_{2}$
