Q. Which of the following reactions will not result in the formation of carbon-carbon bonds ?

Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2009Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

(a) Reimer-Tiemann reaction :
(b) Cannizzaro reaction:
$\underset{\text { Formaladehyde }}{ HCHO } \xrightarrow{50 NaOH }\underset{\text { Sodium formate }}{ HCOO ^{\ominus}Na ^{\oplus}} + \underset{\text{Methanol}}{CH _{3} OH}$
(c) Wurtz reaction :
$H _{3} C - I +2 Na + I - CH _{3} \longrightarrow CH _{3}- CH _{3}+2 NaI$
Methyl iodide Ethane
(d) Friedel-Crafts acylation :
From the above examples it is evident that $C - C$ bond formation does not takes place in Cannizzaro reaction.
