Chemiosmosis requires a membrane, a proton pump with ATP synthetase activity, a proton gradient between the lumen and the membrane. The high concentration of protons within the thyllakoid lumen activates the proton pump, that acts as a channel and allows diffusion of protons back across the membrane, this releases enough energy to activate ATP synthetase enzyme that catalyses the formation of ATP.
