Lamarck gave the theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics wherein the organism can pass on the physical characteristics acquired during its lifetime via use and disuse to its offspring. Hence, the giraffe has a long neck due to the regular use of stretching the neck to reach the leaves at the top part of the plant/tree. His theory was used to explain the loss in vision in cave dwelling mammals due to their less use of eyes and more use of other senses in low light condition.
Although, it could not explain the suppression of intellectual capacity in offspring of a very intellect individual because the theory suggests that whichever ability is more used is passed to the next generation.
