Azotobacter is free living, aerobic, non-photosynthetic bacteria which carries out nitrogen fixation. Nostoc is a cyanobacteria, which can carry out nitrogen fixation in both free living and in symbiotic state. Rhizobium forms symbiotic association with root nodules of leguminous plants. Rhodospirullum carries out nitrogen fixation in anaerobic condition.
