Amino acids are compounds which contain ammo $ (-NH_{2})$ and carboxyl $\left( -COOH \right) $ both. the groups in them. In the solid state an amino acid ordinarily exist as a Zwitter ion which is formed by the transfer of proton from $ \alpha -COOH $ group to $ NH_{2}$ group.
