Erythromycin and other macrolide antibiotics inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the $23S$ $r RNA$ molecule (in the $50S$ subunit) of the bacterial ribosome blocking the exit of the growing peptide chain. The association between erythromycin and the ribosome is reversible and takes place only when the $50S$ subunit is free from $t RNA$ molecules bearing nascent peptide chains.
