The predominant metabolism of phenylalanine occurs through tyrosine. Tyrosine is incorporated into proteins and is involved in the synthesis of variety of biologically important compounds -epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine (catecholamines), thyroid hormones - and the pigment melanin.
