Q. Which of the following halides cannot be hydrolysed at room temperature?

$I.$ $TeF_{6}$ $II.$ $SF_{6}$ $III.$ $NCl_{3}$ $IV.$ $NF_{3}$

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

Here $SF_{6}$ cannot be hydrolysed at room temperature as in $SF_{6},$ S-atom is sterically hindered by six fluorine atoms hence, attack of $H_{2}O$ molecule will not occur. $NF_{3}$ is not hydrolysed due to absence of vacant orbital on both N and F-atoms.

$TeF_{6}$ is hydrolysed due to large size of Te and presence of vacant d-orbital.
