$CH _{3} COR$ is oxidized by $NaOI$ to form iodoform and $RCO _{2} Na$ wherein
$C _{6} H _{5} COCH _{3}+ NaOH + I _{2} \rightarrow C _{6} H _{5} CO _{2} Na + CHI _{3}$
Methyl acetate and Acetamide will not give a yellow precipitate. But 2-Hydroxypropane and Acetophenone will give a yellow precipitate.
