Q. Which of the following comments about the following equilibrium reaction is the most correct?
$H_{2}SO_{4} (aq) + NH_{3} (aq) {\rightleftharpoons} HSO^{-}_{4} (aq) + NH^{+}_{4} (aq)$

UPSEEUPSEE 2011Equilibrium

Solution:

$H _{2} SO _{4}$ when dissolved in water dissociates almost completely and produces a large number of $H ^{+}$ ions. These $H ^{+}$ ions are taken by $NH _{3}$ and its conjugate acid $NH _{4}^{+}$ is formed. Thus, the equilibrium lies to the right side or forward reaction.

$H _{2} SO _{4}(a q)+ NH _{3}(a q) \rightleftharpoons$

$HSO _{4}^{-}(a q)+ NH _{4}^{+}(a q)$
