Q. Which of the following combines with $ Fe^{2+} $ ions to form a brown complex?

Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2005

Solution:

Nitric oxide (NO) may contain impurities of $NO _{2}$ and $NO _{2}$. It is purified by absorbing it in ferrous sulphate $\left(F e^{2+}\right)$ solution, the dark brown nitro so ferrous sulphate is obtained, on heating it pure nitric oxide is liberated.
$\left[ Fe \left( H _{2} O \right)_{6}\right] SO _{4}+\underset{\text { impure gas }}{ NO } \xrightarrow{- H _{2} O }\left[ Fe \left( H _{2} O \right)_{5} NO \right]$
$SO _{4} \xrightarrow{\text { heat }}FeSO _{4}+\underset{\text { pure gas }}{ NO }+5 H _{2} O$
