Q. Which of the following arrangements represent increasing oxidation number of the central atom?

Redox Reactions

Solution:

Given elements are:

$CrO _{2}^{-}, CrO _{4}^{2-}, ClO _{3}^{-}$ and $MnO _{4}^{-}$

Let the oxidation number of central atom be '$x$'.

Oxidation number of $O =- 2$.

$CrO_{2}^{-}: x +2 \times(-2)=-1$

$x - 4 =- 1$ or $x = + 3$

$CrO _{4}^{2-}: x +4 \times(-2)=-2$

$x-8=-2$ or $x=+6$

$ClO _{3}^{-}: x +3 \times(-2)=-1$

$x-6=-1$ or $x=+5$

$MnO _{4}^{-}: x +4 \times(-2)=-1$

$x -8=-1$ or $x =+ 7$

increasing order of oxidation number of the central atom is:

$CrO _{2}^{-}< ClO _{3}^{-}< CrO _{4}^{2-}< MnO _{4}^{-}$
